To successfully make a claim on land or property, the land / property must be unregistered and have no legal owner that can be traced .
Step 1
.
The very first steps to making a claim is to first locate an unregistered, abandoned or neglected property or plot of land. The most obvious way to do this is to take a look around your local town or village. You will almost certainly spot derelict buildings, overgrown plots of land and spaces that simply look wasted. You should spend some time doing this until you have 4 or 5 properties / land plots to work with. This method is known as targeting and you'll be amazed at just how many there are in your area that you have never noticed. Spend a week or so 'spotting' until you have a few.

Step 2 part A
.
Once you have your list and wish to see if you can get possession, you then need to contact the land registry for your area. The register is now open to general inspection so the Land Registry for your area should be able to give you lots of information on your target
.
You will need the postal address of the property / land which may be easy or you can find it out by sending form OC1 with a location map or a rough sketch of the land / property to your local Land Registry. The form OC1 instructs your local land registry to provide you with official copies of the register / plan along with a copy of the title plan if required showing actual boundaries of the land / property etc.

.
Once you have the postal code of the propery / land plot, you will then need to complete form 313 to find out if anyone owns the property. The Land Registry may charge a small fee of about £4 which will be refunded if the search shows that there is no registered owner
